Mental Health First Aid Training

We designed Lifehouse Spa & Hotel to be a comfortable, luxurious, and safe environment for all who enter our doors. That applies to guests, but also to our wonderful staff. Our top priority is making sure all our employees feel valued and supported. With this in mind, we’ve undertaken several new initiatives to educate and inform the whole Lifehouse team about inclusion and wellbeing.

Recently, some of our team members participated in a training session on Mental Health First Aid. While physical first aid has been a requirement for businesses for many years, mental health has not yet received the attention it deserves. We signed up our staff for this course to help create a supportive environment to foster positive mental health and remove the stigma still surrounding it. The training we received has helped equip our team with the skills and confidence needed to spot the signs of mental ill health, know which actions to take, and take care of each other’s wellbeing.

Staff completed a one-day course and received a certificate valid for three years. They covered the following modules:

  • Understanding the difference between mental health and mental ill health.

  • Describing the components of mental wellbeing and how it relates to resilience.

  • Understanding how risk factors associated with mental ill health can lead to problems in the workplace.

  • Being able to recognise how mental health problems can affect day-to-day living.

  • Understanding how social and cultural attitudes can lead to mental illness.

  • Understanding causes of stress and knowing how stress can stem from influences resulting from work.

  • Understanding the difference between anxiety and a panic attack.

  • Being able to understand different types of mental health.

  • Understanding why mental health is not discussed in the workplace.

  • Understanding how anxiety, phobias, depression, bipolar, and schizophrenia is a denominator for ill related mental health.

  • Being able to recognise other types of legislation that relates to Mental Health UK.

  • Being able to understand The Management Standards Approach.

  • Being able to understand how an employee’s emotional intelligence enables them to manage their emotions with other people, both individually and in groups.

  • Understanding problems in the workplace as a result of unidentified mental health.

  • Being able to implement an action plan to promote a healthy workplace.

We remain committed to providing a safe and supportive work environment for all our staff and continue to pursue wellbeing initiatives that will benefit the entire team.
