our guide to Thorpe-Le-Soken

Thorpe-Le-Soken is a picturesque little village 10 miles from Britain’s first city, Colchester. It’s a busy place with lots of visitors stopping off to explore on the way to the beautiful beaches of Clacton or Frinton. Essex has a reputation for high vibes with lots of independent shops, bars and restaurants, but the flip-side is the outstanding scenery, historic towns and coastal gems.

Here are some of our favourite spots we love to visit in-and-around our local area!

Frinton-on-Sea beach

A glorious beach that remains pretty much as nature intended, sea, sand, old school beach huts and an ice cream shop serving up Mr Whippys by the dozen, especially when the weather is behaving. A Tripadvisor 2023 Top Pick, and awarded a Blue Flag for its cleanliness, we highly recommend come rain or shine!

Great Danes

While you’re in Frinton-on-Sea, we highly recommend hunting out this little slice of Denmark. Great Danes is one of those great independent shops that is a treat to visit. More than “just a shop”, their sneaky outdoor bar The Patio serves a fantastic range of cocktails, wines and danish beer. Well worth a visit.

Clacton Pier

We’re truly spoilt for tranquil coastline living round these parts, but if you’re looking for more excitement than zen, it would be a good idea to head down to Clacton Pier for some old school promenade fun. With its arcade, water park and funfair you’re spoilt with choice. Lots to see, lots to do.

Brightlingsea Lido

Because who doesn't like a dip outdoors? Brightlingsea Community Lido is a classic 1930s open air swimming pool right on the coast at Brightlingsea, Essex, open for swimming from May to September. 50 metres of pure (unheated) fun.

Essex Wildlife Trust Fingringhoe Wick Nature Discovery Park

One for a day trip. A picture perfect haven 45 mins south of our place. Watch the tide fall in peace and explore the many “hides” that will undoubtedly hook you into life as an avid birdwatcher. Great shop and cafe with an excellent cup of tea, always appreciated after a hike around this delightful slice of England.

Colchester

A bustling place with LOADS to see and do. Colchester Zoo, Green Island Gardens, The Munnings Art Museum and the Castle Museum are all worthy of the to-do list.
